Larson was born in Duluth, Minnesota, and played college football at the University of Minnesota. He was a standout offensive lineman for the Golden Gophers, and was a part of their 1960 national championship team.

Larson was drafted by the Giants in the sixth round of the 1961 NFL Draft. He played tackle, guard, and center with the Giants, but had most of his success as a center. He earned a Pro Bowl selection in the 1968 season, and snapped the ball to the great Fran Tarkenton.
Larson retired from the NFL in 1974, after 13 seasons with the Giants. He played in 179 games during his career, and was named as one of the top 100 Giants players of all-time.
