Nancy Iskander, the mother of two boys killed in a speeding street race, speaks out against the convicted driver who awaits sentencing. Despite guilty verdicts, Iskander feels the justice system has failed her family.
A tragedy that shattered a Los Angeles family four years ago continues to haunt them as the convicted killer awaits sentencing. Nancy Iskander, the mother of two young boys who were killed in a speeding street race, yearns for justice and holds the convicted driver accountable.
In 2020, Rebecca Grossman, a wealthy socialite, drove her Mercedes through a crosswalk at excessive speed, fatally striking 11-year-old Mark Iskander and his 8-year-old brother, Jacob. Nancy Iskander, along with her youngest son, narrowly escaped harm.
While Grossman was found guilty in a trial that concluded in February, she has yet to receive her sentence. Nancy Iskander alleges that Grossman's relentless "games" both in and out of court have tormented her family.
"She had numerous opportunities to show mercy, but she showed none," Iskander told Fox News Digital. "She only exhibited hatred toward my family, as if we were her mortal enemies."
Adding to the Iskanders' anguish, Grossman's post-conviction representation by attorney James Spertus has raised concerns. Spertus, a confidant of the judge and defense lawyer for disgraced former deputy district attorney Diana Teran, is seen as a strategic move by Grossman to undermine the prosecution's case.
In a move that outraged the public, Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon's office initially removed the lead prosecutors from the case in response to Grossman's ploys. However, Gascon's top deputy later reversed the decision, reinstating Gould and Castro.
Iskander applauds the reinstatement of the dedicated prosecutors who have tirelessly pursued justice for her sons.
"They are familiar with the evidence, Mrs. Grossman's tactics, and the circumstances surrounding Mark and Jacob's deaths," Iskander said. "Handing the case to someone new at this stage would be illogical."
Grossman's defense team alleges prosecutorial misconduct and is seeking a new trial. Meanwhile, prosecutors are arguing for Spertus' removal due to a conflict of interest.
Grossman faces a potential sentence of up to 34 years in prison for her convictions on two counts of second-degree murder, vehicular manslaughter, and hit-and-run resulting in death.
Nancy Iskander and her husband have found solace in charity work, establishing an orphanage, a foster care nonprofit, and raising funds for scholarships through the Mark and Jacob Iskander Foundation.
As the case approaches its conclusion, Iskander hopes the justice system will deliver closure and allow her family to heal from their unimaginable loss.
"They were innocent children simply crossing the street," Iskander said. "This should be a straightforward case with a clear outcome: justice for my boys."
