Fox News host Sean Hannity expresses outrage over the Mar-a-Lago raid and the handling of the NY v. Trump case, accusing Judge Merchan of bias and the prosecution of weaponizing justice.
Fox News host Sean Hannity has unleashed a scathing attack on the raid of former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago home, alleging that Attorney General Merrick Garland and the Justice Department were preparing for a possible shoot-out. Hannity's commentary on "Hannity" focused on the political motivations and alleged irregularities surrounding the investigation and prosecution of Trump.
Hannity asserted that Trump cannot receive a fair trial in New York due to the purported bias of Judge Merchan, who he claimed has been opposed to Trump from the outset. He highlighted the case of Michael Cohen, Trump's former attorney, who admitted to stealing tens of thousands of dollars from the Trump Organization. Despite this admission, Hannity argued that Cohen was never charged or arrested.
Hannity criticized the prosecution's use of "a novel legal theory" to elevate a misdemeanor past the statute of limitations into a felony, accusing them of weaponizing justice. He further denounced Judge Merchan for blocking testimony from a former FEC chairman who could clarify federal election law.
Hannity accused Judge Merchan of being a "biased, disgraceful example of nothing but a Biden-donor, prejudiced judge." He questioned the motivations of the investigation and prosecution, suggesting that it was politically driven.
Hannity's comments reflect his ongoing support for Trump and his belief that the former president is being unfairly targeted. He has repeatedly criticized the Mar-a-Lago raid, calling it an "unprecedented assault on the rule of law."
The raid on Mar-a-Lago has been the subject of intense scrutiny and controversy. The Justice Department has stated that the raid was part of an ongoing investigation into the handling of classified documents, but has provided limited details about the specific reasons for the search.
Trump has denied any wrongdoing and has accused the Justice Department of being politically motivated. He has also criticized the appointment of a special counsel, Jack Smith, to oversee the investigation.
The NY v. Trump case involves allegations of tax fraud and other financial misconduct. Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges. The trial is scheduled to begin in October 2023.
