A deputy constable in Harris County, Texas, was shot and injured in an "ambush" attack by a robbery suspect following a police pursuit on Friday. The deputy, identified as Deteryon Fontonet, is expected to recover.

Harris County, Texas, Deputy Constable Deteryon Fontonet was "ambushed" and shot by a robbery suspect following a police pursuit on Friday, according to Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman.

The incident occurred in a residential neighborhood in Spring, Texas, after a high-speed chase involving the suspect, who had allegedly robbed two Academy stores with an AR-15.

Herman said that Fontonet attempted to stop the suspect's vehicle, but the suspect fled and fired upon the deputy. Fontonet's patrol car sustained 16 bullet holes, including shots through the window where he was standing.

Fontonet was transported to a local hospital for surgery on his face but is expected to recover. The suspect was later taken into custody after deputies surrounded the house where they were hiding.

Herman stated that the suspect was charged with attempted capital murder of a peace officer and that the incident highlights the dangerous conditions facing law enforcement officers.

"This is just the world we live in," Herman said. "Our deputy is going to be OK, he’s just going to need some surgery on his face. The good lord was looking out for our deputy and I guess you could say the good Lord was looking out for this suspect that we didn’t kill him because we would have been within our rights to do so."

Herman expressed his gratitude for the outpouring of support for Fontonet and condemned the violence against law enforcement officers.

"I want to thank all the law enforcement agencies that came together and assisted in this investigation," Herman said. "This is what we do when one of our brothers or sisters is in need."
