Harris Edges Trump in Hypothetical General Election Match-Up, New Poll Shows
Vice President Kamala Harris has gained an edge over former President Donald Trump in a hypothetical general election match-up, according to a recent poll conducted by The New York Times and Siena College. The poll, which was conducted after President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential race, found that Harris leads Trump by one percentage point among likely voters, 48% to 47%. Among registered voters, Trump leads Harris by two percentage points.
The results represent a significant shift in the race since Democrats changed their nominee. A New York Times poll in July found that Trump was leading Biden by six points. Harris's lead over Trump is particularly pronounced among younger voters, with the vice president securing a 10-point lead over the Republican nominee among voters 45 and younger. This demographic was previously leading in Trump's favor, according to NYT polling just three weeks earlier.

The poll also found that 79% of Democratic or Democratic-leaning voters want Harris to be the party nominee after Biden's withdrawal from the race, while 27% think Democrats should have a competitive process to select a new nominee. Additionally, 87% of respondents said they either somewhat or strongly approve of Biden's decision to drop out of the race.
However, the poll also revealed that 45% of respondents disapprove of the job Biden is currently doing as president. This suggests that while Harris may have an edge over Trump in a hypothetical match-up, she will likely face challenges in the general election if she is the Democratic nominee.

The poll was conducted from July 22 to 24 with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.3 percentage points. The results suggest that the 2024 presidential election will be closely contested, with Harris and Trump likely to be the leading candidates for their respective parties.
