Former Yankees outfielder Harrison Bader recently named his Mount Rushmore of New York athletes for a TikTok, and it included three former Yankees and no current Mets.
Harrison Bader, a Bronxville native who grew up rooting for the New York Yankees, recently named his Mount Rushmore of New York athletes for a TikTok video. To the surprise of many, the three players he named were all former Yankees: Derek Jeter, Aaron Judge, and Anthony Volpe.
Bader's choices raised some eyebrows, as many consider Derek Jeter to be on the Mount Rushmore of Yankees, but not necessarily all of New York athletes. Aaron Judge, while a phenomenal player, has yet to reach the legendary status of some of the other players who could have been included. And Anthony Volpe, while impressive during his current 21-game hitting streak, is a relatively unknown player who has yet to prove himself over a sustained period.
Bader's omission of any current Mets teammates, such as Pete Alonso, Francisco Lindor, or Edwin Diaz, was also puzzling, especially given the Mets' recent struggles. The team has lost 25 of their last 35 games and is currently sitting at 22-33, the worst record in the NL East.
It is possible that Bader's choices were motivated by nostalgia, as he played for the Yankees for parts of 2022 and 2023. However, his decision to leave out any current Mets teammates could be seen as a sign of dissatisfaction with the team's performance.
Bader's TikTok video came just hours before Mets reliever Jorge Lopez threw his glove in the stands after an ejection and appeared to call the Mets the "worst team in the whole f---ing MLB." Lopez later claimed that he was referring to himself as the worst teammate, but the incident further highlighted the turmoil within the Mets organization.
The Mets will face the reigning NL champs Arizona Diamondbacks in a four-game series this weekend at Citi Field. It remains to be seen whether Bader's Mount Rushmore of New York athletes will inspire the team to turn things around or if it will serve as a reminder of the challenges they are facing.
