After winning the Visit Knoxville Open, Korn Ferry Tour golfer Harry Higgs delivered a heartfelt speech paying tribute to Grayson Murray, who tragically died by suicide, and urging everyone to prioritize kindness and support for those struggling with mental health.
Sunday's Visit Knoxville Open victory for Harry Higgs was bittersweet, as it came amidst the tragic loss of fellow golfer Grayson Murray. In a poignant post-tournament speech, Higgs used his platform to honor Murray's memory and deliver a powerful message about mental health awareness.
"We lost yesterday morning one of our own," Higgs began, visibly moved. "Somebody who went through a lot of difficult things. Somebody who was open and honest about it."
Expressing his sleepless night, Higgs explained that he had been contemplating how to remember Murray and found inspiration in a simple act: kindness.
"I would challenge everybody here, and I'm going to do this myself as well, each day say something nice to someone you love," Higgs implored. "And also, make it a point to say something nice to somebody you do not even know."
Higgs acknowledged the increasing prevalence of mental health struggles, emphasizing the role everyone can play in making a difference. "The world is a very difficult place, and only getting more difficult," he said. "I've been blessed with great parents and a great support system, but Lord knows how many people do."
"Everybody here could be a difference, the difference," Higgs continued. "Brighten up somebody's day, it could mean the world."
Beyond honoring Murray, Higgs' speech was a call to action for greater compassion and understanding towards those facing mental health challenges. By setting an example of kindness, he hoped to inspire others to do the same.
"Knoxville, you guys were warm and gracious hosts," Higgs concluded, addressing the tournament's location. "This will mean the world to me as I think back on it, but I will just remember the great people I met here in Knoxville."
Grayson Murray's tragic passing has shocked the golf world and beyond, prompting an outpouring of condolences and reflection about the importance of mental health support.
In a statement released by Murray's parents, Eric and Terry, they expressed their gratitude for the support shown by the PGA Tour and the golf community. "Life wasn't always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now," the statement read.
Harry Higgs' powerful speech serves as a reminder of the vital need for kindness, compassion, and open dialogue about mental health. By embracing Murray's memory, Higgs and others are helping to create a world where everyone feels valued, supported, and loved.
