The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has released additional details about the activity of Thomas Matthew Crooks, the 20-year-old gunman who attempted to assassinate former President Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13.

According to Kevin Rojek, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Pittsburgh Field Office, Crooks had "a sustained detailed effort to plan an attack on some event" leading up to the rally. While the FBI has not yet established a definitive motive for Crooks' actions, Rojek revealed that he had conducted numerous searches related to both President Biden and former President Trump, including specific details about Trump's rally in Butler.

Surveillance footage from a local business captured Crooks walking around the rally perimeter at 4:26 p.m. on July 13, about an hour and a half before Trump began speaking. Crooks was later seen climbing up the American Glass Research (AGR) building and traversing multiple rooftops between 6:05 and 6:08 p.m., just six minutes before the shooting.

Rojek refuted rumors that there was a second shooter, stating that Crooks was the only individual on the roof during that time. However, the FBI confirmed that Crooks had flown a drone for 11 minutes earlier that day, between 3:51 p.m. and 4:02 p.m. The drone's flight path could have provided Crooks with valuable information about the event's security posture.

In addition to the footage and drone activity, Rojek revealed that Crooks had made over 60 searches related to President Biden and former President Trump over the month leading up to the attack. He had also searched for information about the Democratic and Republican National Conventions in 2024.

The FBI's investigation into the assassination attempt is ongoing, and Rojek emphasized that the bureau is "leaving no stone unturned" in their pursuit of answers. They are working to determine Crooks' motive, whether there were any co-conspirators, and how he obtained the high-powered rifle used in the attack.

The shooting at the Trump rally has raised concerns about the safety of political events and the potential for future attacks. The FBI is urging the public to report any suspicious activity or threats to law enforcement.
