Hezbollah, an Islamic terrorist organization backed by Iran, has developed a sophisticated network of tunnels in southern Lebanon. These tunnels, stretching over 100 miles, pose a significant threat to Israel, as they provide Hezbollah with operational advantages and the ability to house hostages.

Since the Second Lebanon War in 2006, Hezbollah has been mining tunnels in southern Lebanon in collaboration with Iran and North Korea. Inspired by Pyongyang's extensive tunnel system, Hezbollah has constructed two types of tunnels: offensive tunnels and infrastructure tunnels.

Intended for military operations similar to those of North Korea, these tunnels penetrate Israeli territory and have been used to transport troops and heavy weaponry. At least six such tunnels were discovered and neutralized by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) during Operation Northern Shield in 2018.

These tunnels form an underground network connecting Hezbollah's headquarters in Beirut to its logistical base in the Beqaa Valley. They provide Hezbollah with a first and second line of defense against an Israeli invasion and are used to store weapons and supplies. One such tunnel is estimated to be 28 miles long.

Hezbollah has a significant presence and influence in Lebanon, with the support of around 40%-50% of the population. It is better funded and organized than the Lebanese government and military, and its sphere of influence extends to the country's security apparatus. Hezbollah's operations are supported by Iran and North Korea, making it a formidable threat to Israel.

Despite the IDF's destruction of approximately 80% of Hamas' tunnels in Gaza, Hezbollah's tunnels remain largely intact and pose a greater threat. They provide Hezbollah with the ability to rearm, maneuver, and house hostages during operational conflicts. Former IDF Major Gen. Yaakov Amidror believes Israel needs to take a proactive approach against Hezbollah, despite the potential for a devastating war.

Hezbollah's support base within the Lebanese population, particularly among the Shiite community, makes it difficult for the government to take action against the organization. The demographic shift towards a Muslim majority in Lebanon and the presence of Hezbollah members within the military further complicate the situation. Hezbollah's ability to operate from within civilian populations poses a significant challenge for Israel in any potential conflict.
