Hillary Clinton has lambasted young anti-Israel protesters as uninformed about the history of the Middle East and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In an interview on MSNBC, Clinton expressed her frustration with the protesters' lack of knowledge about the region's complex past.

"They don't know very much at all about the history of the Middle East, or, frankly, about history in many areas of the world, including in our own country," Clinton said.

Clinton pointed to a specific example of her husband, former President Bill Clinton, offering then-Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat a state on 96% of the territory occupied by the Palestinians, with the remaining 4% of Israel to be given to reach the desired 100%.

"This offer was made and if Yasser Arafat had accepted it, there would have been a Palestinian state now for about 24 years," Clinton said, lamenting that no agreement was reached.

The former secretary of state's claims were based on her numerous conversations with young people over the past few months. Anti-Israel student protests have erupted at schools across the country following the October 7 terrorist attacks by Hamas on Israel and Israel's subsequent military response.

Clinton believes that the protesters' ignorance about the complexities of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has fueled their opposition to Israel. She emphasized that the issue is not as straightforward as some protesters believe and that there is a long history of negotiations and attempts at peace.

"I think it's really important for people, especially young people, to understand the history of the Middle East and to understand the history of the Palestinian conflict," Clinton said. "You can't just make these sweeping generalizations without knowing the facts."

Clinton has faced direct confrontations with angry students, including pro-Palestinian protesters who shouted her down during a speech at Columbia University in February. Despite the interruptions, Clinton remained composed and emphasized the importance of having informed discussions about the Middle East.

"We need to have a dialogue based on facts and history, not on emotion and ignorance," Clinton said. "I hope these young people will take the time to learn more about this conflict and to understand the complexities involved."

Clinton's comments have sparked a debate about the role of history education in understanding current events. Critics argue that schools are not providing students with a comprehensive understanding of global affairs, while supporters maintain that students need to be equipped with the historical context to make informed judgments.

The former secretary of state's remarks have also highlighted the ongoing challenge of finding a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Both sides have a long and complex history, and any solution will require a deep understanding of the region's past and present.
