Despite warnings of hazardous conditions, a skier in Colorado was night skiing when a snowboarder careened into her, causing significant injuries. The snowboarder fled the scene, but was later identified through his social media presence and distinctive gear.
A Colorado skier suffered severe injuries after being hit by a snowboarder who fled the scene. Despite hazardous travel conditions, the skier was night skiing on Aspen Mountain when the accident occurred.
According to the lawsuit filed by the victim, Anne Cassidy, she was chatting with a friend beside the unloading area of the Gent's Ridge Lift when the snowboarder crashed into her from behind. Cassidy, an experienced skier, sustained multiple knee injuries and a shoulder injury.
The snowboarder allegedly fled the scene after the impact, leaving Cassidy writhing in pain. Cassidy's friend gave chase but was unable to catch the suspect.
However, another witness, a good Samaritan, pursued the snowboarder and took a photo of him on his phone. This photo proved to be crucial in identifying the unknown rider.
Aspen Mountain staff reviewed lift footage and identified a rider wearing the same gear as the snowboarder in the photo. The rider's RFID ticket identified him, and he was named as a defendant in Cassidy's lawsuit.
A private investigator hired by Cassidy's attorney tracked down the snowboarder using his social media accounts, where he wore the same gear in stories taken in Aspen around the time of the accident.
Cassidy's injuries required extensive physical therapy and have significantly impacted her life. She is unable to participate in any sports, experiences pain upon movement or strain, and has limited range of motion.
The lawsuit alleges negligence on the part of the snowboarder, who failed to keep watch for downhill skiers and to share his information after the accident. Cassidy is suing for her medical expenses and seeking punitive damages.
The case highlights the dangers of hit-and-run incidents on ski slopes. Despite the fact that these incidents are not common, they can have serious consequences for victims.
Skiers and snowboarders have a responsibility to ski under control and to stop if they hit someone. Failure to do so can result in legal repercussions.
The outcome of Cassidy's lawsuit will likely send a message to skiers and snowboarders that hit-and-run incidents will not be tolerated. Skiers need to be aware of the risks and take precautions to avoid causing injury to others.
