The House Oversight Committee hearing on a resolution to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt descended into chaos on Wednesday, as Republican lawmakers engaged in a heated exchange over endorsements in upcoming primary races. The incident underscores the long-simmering tensions within the GOP that have repeatedly led to disarray in the 118th Congress.

Rep. Will Timmons (R-S.C.) expressed frustration with the infighting, emphasizing that members should focus on their own races. However, he acknowledged a "domino effect" when colleagues involve themselves in others' campaigns, prompting countervailing forces.

Timmons, who is facing a primary challenger backed by members of the House Freedom Caucus, referred to Chairman Bob Good (R-Va.)'s endorsement of candidates running against incumbent Republicans. Good defended his actions, claiming that endorsements against him initiated from "liberal moderate members" and "establishment RINOs."

In a bitter runoff election involving Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas), Good and Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) have backed Gonzales' opponent, while Gonzales has the support of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and other Texas GOP lawmakers.

"I won all 29 counties in the primary, and I'm gonna win all 29 counties in the runoff," Gonzales asserted. He dismissed his opponent's endorsements, questioning Gaetz's focus on "eyebrows" rather than defeating Democrats.

Gaetz responded, "I would love to spend all of my time fighting only the Democrats, but if Republicans like Tony Gonzales are going to vote like Democrats and act like Democrats, I’ll fight them too."

The infighting has drawn criticism from other GOP lawmakers. Rep. Dan Meuser (R-Pa.) deemed it "outrageous," emphasizing the importance of unity in winning elections. Rep. Greg Murphy (R-N.C.) expressed disappointment, lamenting that Republicans are "caring more about fighting against Republicans than the real true challenge" posed by Democratic rule.

The turmoil reflects the ideological and political differences that have plagued the House GOP majority. As members jockey for power and influence in the upcoming election season, the divisions are expected to intensify.
