EXCLUSIVE: House Majority Whip Tom Emmer has sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, calling for an immediate investigation of former Trump attorney Michael Cohen for lying to Congress and admitting to stealing from the Trump organization.
In a strongly worded letter, Emmer, a Republican from Minnesota, outlined multiple criminal referrals from congressional committees alleging that Cohen has committed perjury and made false statements during sworn testimony. The letter specifically points to Cohen's 2018 guilty plea for lying to the Senate Intelligence Committee and his recent admission to stealing from the Trump organization during his testimony in the NY v. Trump trial.
Emmer accused Cohen of being "a pathological liar, particularly to Congress," and cited evidence that Cohen repeatedly claimed he did not seek a White House role despite evidence to the contrary. During the 2019 House Oversight Committee hearing, Cohen admitted that he had discussions about working with Trump and "would have liked to be considered" for chief of staff.
Emmer further highlighted Cohen's admission during the NY v. Trump trial that he stole tens of thousands of dollars from the Trump organization. "In other words, the prosecution's star witness admitted to a more significant felony than what the prosecution has charged former President Trump with," Emmer wrote to Garland.
The letter also expressed concern over the role of top Manhattan prosecutor Matthew Colangelo, who previously served as a senior Justice Department official in the Biden administration. Emmer demanded information about Colangelo's employment and questioned why the Justice Department has not acted on the criminal referrals against Cohen.
"Any further effort to protect the district attorney's star witness, Mr. Cohen, only enhances the appearance that the DOJ is engaging in a two-tiered application of justice," Emmer wrote.
He accused the Biden administration's DOJ of "colluding" with the Manhattan District Attorney's office and urged Garland to "take immediate action on the criminal referrals." Emmer threatened to "use every resource at our disposal to hold Joe Biden's corrupt Justice Department's feet to the fire" until Cohen is prosecuted and Americans receive answers about the "shady cast of characters" involved in the NY v. Trump case.
The letter marks a significant escalation in the legal and political battle surrounding the Trump Organization trial and Cohen's involvement. It remains to be seen how the Justice Department will respond to Emmer's demands and whether Cohen will face further criminal charges.
