House Republicans have alleged that Hunter Biden invoked his father's role as Vice President in an attempt to discourage further SEC scrutiny in a 2016 investigation into his business associates. The accusations form part of an ongoing impeachment inquiry against President Biden.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, have accused Hunter Biden of "gratuitously" using his father's role as Vice President in an effort to deter further investigation by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in 2016.

The accusations revolve around an SEC investigation into a tribal bond scheme involving Hunter Biden's business associates and their affiliated entities. As part of the probe, Hunter Biden was subpoenaed to produce documents and communications related to Rosemont Seneca Bohai, an entity in which he allegedly held a corporate secretary position.
According to Comer and Jordan, in response to the subpoena, Hunter Biden's attorney invoked his father's position as Vice President, requesting that the investigation be kept confidential to avoid negative media attention that could potentially harm both his son and the Vice President.

The House Republicans contend that Hunter Biden's reminder about his father's position could be interpreted as an attempt to discourage further SEC scrutiny. Notably, on May 11, 2016, the SEC announced charges against seven individuals in connection with the tribal bond scheme, but Hunter Biden was not among those charged.
However, Hunter Biden's business associates, Devon Archer and Jason Galanis, were charged. Archer was convicted of defrauding a Native American tribal entity and sentenced to one year and a day in prison, while Galanis pleaded guilty to securities fraud and was sentenced to 14 years.

Comer and Jordan have requested documents and communications between the SEC, the White House, and Rosemont Seneca Bohai related to the investigation. They have also demanded the appearance of Tejal D. Shah, a former staff attorney who led the inquiry, for a transcribed interview.
The accusations against Hunter Biden are part of an ongoing impeachment inquiry into President Biden. House Republicans are investigating the president's knowledge and involvement in his family's international influence-peddling schemes, which they allege have generated millions of dollars for the Biden family and their associates.

Earlier this month, Comer, Jordan, and House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith referred criminal charges to the Justice Department against Hunter Biden and his uncle, James Biden, accusing them of making false statements to Congress about their involvement in the alleged schemes.
Hunter Biden has denied any wrongdoing, claiming that he has never discussed business dealings with his father. The White House has also dismissed the accusations against the president as "politically motivated."

The impeachment inquiry continues, with House Republicans seeking additional evidence to support their allegations while President Biden and his family maintain their innocence.
