Top Republicans in the House are condemning the Biden administration for expressing condolences over the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, who was known for his brutal repression of dissidents and his support for terrorism.
House Republicans are vehemently criticizing the Biden administration for issuing condolences upon the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, a controversial figure known for his ruthless suppression of dissent and his backing of terrorist proxies.
House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) denounced the administration's actions as "absurd," emphasizing the glaring contradiction between its supposed support for human rights and its offer of sympathy for the "Butcher of Tehran."
House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) condemned the State Department's message as "unacceptable, unnecessary, and outrageous," calling it a new low for President Biden. She pointed to Raisi's past as a judge, where he allegedly participated in the execution of up to 30,000 political dissidents, and his brutal response to recent protests in Iran.
Stefanik also accused Secretary of State Antony Blinken of "weak leadership" and a willingness to "appease the hostile Iranian regime."
The State Department released a brief statement expressing condolences for the death of Raisi, Foreign Minister Amir-Abdollahian, and other Iranian officials killed in a helicopter crash. The statement reaffirmed support for the Iranian people and their struggle for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
However, this gesture has sparked outrage among Republicans. Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) branded Raisi an "evil tyrant" and questioned why the United States should offer condolences to a regime that has persecuted and killed countless Iranians.
Rep. Mike Waltz (R-Fla.) called for the Biden administration to publicly denounce Iran's regime rather than expressing condolences. He advocated for supporting Iranian resistance fighters and returning to the "maximum pressure" campaign pursued by the Trump administration.
State Department spokesman Matt Miller defended the U.S. position, acknowledging Raisi's repressive record but expressing regret for any loss of life. He emphasized that the administration's fundamental approach to Iran remains unchanged.
Fox News Digital reached out to the State Department for further comment.
The Biden administration's condolences have drawn widespread criticism from Republicans, who view it as a betrayal of the administration's supposed commitment to human rights and a sign of weakness towards Iran. The controversy is expected to escalate further as Republicans continue to scrutinize the administration's foreign policy decisions.
