Three suspects are in custody after a home invasion in Houston turned violent when one of the suspects allegedly shot an officer who had responded to the scene. The homeowner's daughter had mistakenly opened the door to let the suspects in, believing they were delivery drivers.

Houston Police Department (HPD) has arrested and charged three men accused of invading a home, tying up a mother, and shooting an officer on Tuesday morning.

The incident began when the homeowner's daughter answered the door to what she believed was a DoorDash delivery. However, according to the homeowner's account to local news outlet KHOU, the men pulled guns from a DoorDash bag and forced their way inside.

"As soon as she opened the door, he pulled a gun out of a DoorDash bag, and he forced entry," Ben Bates told KHOU. "They zip-tied my daughter, and she had her one-year-old and three-year-old, they proceeded to ransack the house."

The suspects did not harm the children but forced the mother to guide them through the rooms as they searched for valuables.

Following a neighbor's call for help, officers responded to the scene and confronted two suspects. While one suspect, Michael Perez, 38, was being apprehended, another suspect, Raymond Perez, 35, emerged from a back room and began shooting, striking Officer S. Durfee in the leg.

Officer Durfee returned fire but did not hit anyone. Raymond Perez then fled the scene through the back door of the residence.

A third suspect, Brian A. Garcia Chavez, 18, was waiting in a vehicle and took off after the shooting.

Houston Police apprehended Raymond Perez about one block away from the home and charged him with aggravated assault against a public servant, aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, and unlawful carrying of a weapon.

SWAT team officers later located and arrested Garcia Chavez several hours later. Both Garcia Chavez and Michael Perez were charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon.

Fortunately, the woman and her children were unharmed during the incident. Officer Durfee was transported to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and later released. He is expected to make a full recovery.

The HPD is continuing its investigation into the incident, and further charges may be filed.
