Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, was found guilty on all three gun charges in his federal trial in Wilmington, Delaware, exposing the extent of his drug use and illegal gun possession. Despite sympathy pleas from his defense and the presence of his family in the courtroom, jurors dismissed the defense's arguments and reached a swift verdict.
Hunter Biden's federal gun trial concluded in a resounding verdict of guilty on all three counts, highlighting the damning evidence against the son of President Joe Biden. The charges stemmed from Biden's purchase of a .38-caliber Colt revolver in October 2018 while he was struggling with drug addiction.
Hunter Biden's defense strategy hinged on a complex argument about his state of mind during the purchase, claiming that his drug addiction rendered him incapable of knowingly lying on the federal form affirming he was not an "unlawful user of, or addicted to," illegal drugs. Defense attorney Abbe Lowell attempted to parse the meaning of words, arguing that Biden's past tense denial of addiction somehow excused his present-tense lie.
Despite the defense's assertion that Biden was not "conscious and aware" when he purchased the gun, prosecutors presented evidence of several damning text messages to suspected drug dealers in the days leading up to and following the purchase. These messages coincided with large cash withdrawals and clandestine meetings at a 7-Eleven convenience store, casting doubt on the defense's claims.
Another aspect of the defense focused on sympathy for a recovering drug addict, with the argument that Biden's addiction should overshadow his unlawful actions. However, prosecutors emphasized that Biden's charges were not related to his drug use, but rather to his lies on the federal form and his illegal possession of a firearm.
During the trial, Hunter Biden's mother, First Lady Jill Biden, and other family members were present in the courtroom, potentially influencing the jury's perception of the case. However, prosecutor Leo Wise countered this by reminding the jury that "the people sitting in the gallery are not evidence."
Wise reiterated President Biden's recent statement that "no one is above the law," emphasizing that even a privileged and well-connected individual like Hunter Biden must face consequences for his actions.
The jury's swift verdict underscores the overwhelming evidence presented by prosecutors and the failure of the defense's arguments. It serves as a reminder that individuals, regardless of their family ties or circumstances, must be held accountable for their actions before the law.
