Hunter Biden was convicted on all charges Tuesday in a landmark criminal case that focused on his purchase of a firearm in 2018. The verdict sparked reactions from Republicans, who called for further investigations into the Biden family's business dealings and alleged corrupt influence peddling.
Prosecutors argued that Hunter Biden lied on a federal firearm form when he denied being an unlawful user of a firearm or addicted to controlled substances. Hunter Biden purchased the gun from a store called StarQuest Shooters & Survival Supply in Wilmington, Delaware.
Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty in the case. However, the conviction was a significant victory for prosecutors, who had been seeking a guilty verdict for the president's son.
In the wake of the verdict, Republicans called for further investigations into the Biden family's business dealings. They alleged that Hunter Biden had used his father's position to make millions of dollars from foreign influence peddling.
"This is an investigation of Joe Biden," said House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer, R-Ky. "Hunter Biden, Jim Biden, Eric Schwerin, Devon Archer – these are all witnesses in an investigation of Joe Biden."
Republicans also criticized the Justice Department for allegedly trying to protect Hunter Biden from further investigation. They claimed that the department had been trying to negotiate a "sweetheart plea deal" that would have avoided jail time for Hunter Biden.
"The DOJ is running election interference for Joe Biden – that's why DOJ did NOT charge Hunter with being an unregistered foreign agent (FARA) or any crime connected with foreign corruption," said Stephen Miller, former senior adviser to President Trump.
The verdict against Hunter Biden is likely to fuel further investigations into the Biden family's business dealings. Republicans have vowed to continue investigating Hunter Biden and his father, President Joe Biden.
"We must and we will continue as House Republicans to investigate the Biden crime family, for the corrupting influence peddling schemes that generated over $18 million in foreign payments to the Biden crime family members," said Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y.
The White House has not commented on the verdict against Hunter Biden. However, the president has previously said that he is confident that his son will be cleared of any wrongdoing.
The conviction of Hunter Biden is a significant development in the ongoing investigations into the Biden family's business dealings. It is likely to fuel further investigations by Republicans, who have vowed to continue investigating Hunter Biden and his father, President Joe Biden.
