Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, is set to face a federal gun trial on Monday, but that is just one of several legal challenges he currently faces, including tax charges and allegations of making false statements to Congress.
Hunter Biden is scheduled to go on trial on Monday in U.S. District Court for Delaware on charges stemming from a Special Counsel investigation. He is accused of making false statements in the purchase of a firearm, making false statements related to information required to be kept by a licensed firearm dealer, and one count of possession of a firearm by a person who is an unlawful user of or addicted to a controlled substance. If convicted on all counts, Biden could face up to 25 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
In addition to the gun charges, Hunter Biden is also facing federal tax charges in California. He has been charged with three felonies and six misdemeanors concerning $1.4 million in unpaid taxes from January 2017 to October 2020. The tax trial was originally scheduled for June 20th, but Biden's attorneys successfully requested a delay. The trial is now set to begin on September 5th.
House Republicans claim that Hunter Biden lied under oath multiple times during a congressional deposition earlier this year. The House Ways and Means Committee specifically pointed to three examples of alleged falsehoods:
1. Biden mischaracterized his role working for his firm, Rosemont Seneca, and actually controlled bank accounts he claimed in his deposition he did not.
2. Biden claimed he did not help a foreign national obtain a visa, but emails between himself and his former associate Devon Archer show that the first son helped a man named Miguel Aleman with visa documents.
3. Biden claimed he sent a text to the wrong "Zhao," due to being under the influence, but WhatsApp records show Biden only spoke with one Zhao — Henry Zhao of Chinese energy firm CEFC.
House Republicans have not yet taken steps to hold Hunter Biden accountable for these alleged lies or formally accuse him of making false statements to Congress.
In addition to the aforementioned legal challenges, Hunter Biden is also facing other legal issues. He is currently under investigation by the Delaware Attorney General's Office for potential money laundering and other financial crimes. He is also facing several civil lawsuits related to his business dealings.
The legal challenges that Hunter Biden is facing are significant and could have a major impact on his future. The outcome of his gun trial and tax case will have legal consequences, and the allegations of false statements to Congress could lead to further legal action. It remains to be seen how these legal challenges will ultimately unfold and what the long-term implications will be for Hunter Biden.
