Former business associate of Hunter Biden expresses sympathy for his conviction on gun charges, suggesting they are part of a larger political agenda.
In a verdict that has sparked controversy, Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, has been found guilty on all three felony gun charges in his federal trial in Wilmington, Delaware. The former vice president's son was charged with making a false statement in the purchase of a gun, making a false statement related to information required to be kept by a federally licensed gun dealer, and possession of a gun by a person who is an unlawful user of or addicted to a controlled substance.
The prosecution alleged that Biden lied on a federal firearm form in October 2018 when he ticked a box labeled "No" when asked if he is an unlawful user of a firearm or addicted to controlled substances. He purchased the gun from a store called StarQuest Shooters & Survival Supply in Wilmington.
Biden's defense argued that he had not lied on the form and that the gun belonged to his late brother, Beau Biden. However, the jury returned a guilty verdict on all three charges after deliberating for about five hours.
Following the verdict, Hunter Biden released a statement expressing gratitude for the support of his family and friends but also disappointment with the outcome. "Recovery is possible by the grace of God, and I am blessed to experience that gift one day at a time," he said.
Special Counsel David Weiss stated after the trial that "no-one is above the law" and that "Hunter Biden should be no more accountable than any other citizen convicted of this same conduct."
However, a former business associate of Hunter Biden expressed concern that the charges are politically motivated and a distraction from more serious accusations of influence peddling. "It's clearly more political gamesmanship with DOJ," the unidentified associate said in a statement to Fox News Digital.
The Trump campaign also echoed this sentiment, highlighting Hunter Biden's "real crimes" related to alleged business dealings in China, Russia, and Ukraine. "Crooked Joe Biden’s reign over the Biden Family Criminal Empire is all coming to an end," spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said.
Hunter Biden is scheduled to face another trial on federal tax charges later this year. The outcome of that trial is likely to further scrutinize the Biden family's financial dealings and raise questions about the extent of their political influence.
