Compelling testimony from Hunter Biden's ex-wife and ex-girlfriend laid bare the devastating toll of his addiction on his life and marriage, as prosecutors seek to prove he lied about his drug use on a gun purchase form.
WILMINGTON, DEL. - The jury in the ongoing trial of Hunter Biden on federal gun charges was immersed in harrowing details about his drug addiction and its catastrophic impact on his personal life on Wednesday.
Zoe Kestan, Biden's former girlfriend, painted a disturbing picture of his relentless drug use, revealing that he would "want to smoke the second he woke up." She testified that he smoked crack cocaine in hotel rooms, disappeared into public bathrooms to indulge, and even had her procure drugs for him.
Kestan described how Biden's crack cocaine purchases resembled "ping pong balls," which he would break down into smaller pieces to smoke in glass pipes. She also noted that he learned how to cook crack cocaine and that she had witnessed baking soda being used in hotel rooms for that purpose.
Despite Biden's apparent inebriation, Kestan initially found him "charming and charismatic," unaware of the extent of his drug abuse. However, as she spent more time with him, she began to notice conflicting signals in his behavior.
"I didn’t notice it. Sometimes I think that’s because I was catching feelings for him," she told the court.
Kestan described their relationship as a "distraction" for Biden, who she claimed smoked less when they were alone, sometimes for days at a time, in luxury hotel rooms or lavish bungalows.
Alongside Kestan's testimony, the jury was presented with photographs that depicted crack pipes in hotel rooms next to alcohol or beer, a topless Biden in a bubble bath with Kestan, and a screenshot of a FaceTime video showing Biden's back tattoo, which resembled claw marks.
Kestan also revealed that Biden expressed a desire to get sober and tried to purge his body of drugs using frog venom known as "kambo."
Although Kestan knew Biden before and after the purchase of the Colt revolver in question, they did not communicate during the month of the purchase, reconnecting in November 2018 before ultimately ending their relationship.
Hunter Biden's ex-wife of over 20 years, Kathleen Buhle, also took the stand, visibly emotional as she recounted her suspicions of his drug use and the ultimate demise of their marriage.
Buhle discovered a crack pipe in 2015 and, despite couples therapy, the marriage ended in divorce in 2017. She expressed concern and fear, describing how she searched his car for drugs to protect their daughters.
The defense team has argued that Biden's gun purchase was rushed due to pressure from gun shop employees seeking a sale. However, the former salesman who sold the gun testified that Biden was deliberate in his choice of the Colt revolver, ammunition, and speed loader.
The prosecution plans to call six additional witnesses, including Biden's former romantic partner Hallie Biden, before resting their case as early as Thursday afternoon. The defense witnesses will then present their case.
The trial continues on Thursday, with cross-examination of the former salesman and the potential testimony of additional witnesses.
