David Knezevich, the estranged husband of Ana Maria Knezevich, who vanished from her Madrid apartment in February, has been arrested on suspicion of involvement in her disappearance. However, his attorney maintains his innocence and claims the couple's divorce was not acrimonious, despite reports to the contrary.
Federal authorities arrested David Knezevich on Saturday at Miami International Airport in connection with his alleged involvement in the kidnapping of his wife, Ana Maria Knezevich, from an apartment building in Madrid, Spain. The 40-year-old American has been missing since February 2, and her disappearance has been shrouded in mystery.
Ana Maria's disappearance occurred just 30 minutes after a man wearing a motorcycle helmet spray-painted surveillance cameras in her apartment building. Spanish police have also obtained images of a man who they believe may have interacted with Ana Maria shortly before she vanished.
David Knezevich's attorney, Ken Padowitz, vehemently denies his client's involvement in Ana Maria's disappearance. He claims that David has no ties to Madrid, does not speak Spanish, and has been cooperating with investigators from Spain while staying in Serbia.
"He has no answers as to why this happened, and he feels terrible but definitely wants to speak up when facts are put out there indicating that there was a ‘nasty’ divorce when no such thing is a fact," Padowitz told Fox News Digital.
However, Ana Maria's brother, Juan Henao, told police in Fort Lauderdale that the couple was going through a "nasty" divorce with "a lot of money on the line." He also expressed concern about his sister's well-being, stating that David had traveled to Serbia before her disappearance and had been unresponsive to his inquiries about Ana Maria's whereabouts.
Sanna Rameau, a friend of Ana Maria, described the couple as a "successful couple" who had been married for 13 years before they decided to separate last summer. She said that Ana Maria had been spending time in Europe with friends after the couple began discussing divorce.
On February 3, Rameau received a strange text from Ana Maria, which raised concerns about her well-being. The message read, "I met someone wonderful! He has a summer house about 2 [hours] from Madrid. We are going there now and I will spend a few days there. Signal is spotty. I'll call you when I get back."
A second message followed, stating, "Yesterday after therapy I needed a walk and he approached me on the street! Amazing connection. Like I never had before."
Police went to the couple's residence in Madrid earlier this month to investigate Ana Maria's disappearance, but no one answered the door, and packages were piled up outside.
The Fort Lauderdale Police Department has confirmed that Ana Maria Knezevich was reported missing abroad, and the department is not investigating her disappearance. The State Department has not yet responded to requests for comment.
The investigation into Ana Maria Knezevich's disappearance is ongoing, and Spanish police are working with federal authorities in the United States to solve the case.
