Multiple illegal immigrants were arrested in Florida last week on suspicion of unlawfully picking thousands of pounds of palmetto berries, prompting a local sheriff to criticize Washington, D.C., lawmakers for failing to secure the U.S. border.
Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey announced in a video on Monday that eight suspects, four of whom are illegal immigrants, were arrested in connection to stealing about $7,300 worth of palmetto berries from a private property and loading the 9,000-pound harvest into the back of a U-Haul.
Sheriff Ivey emphasized that this case highlights the broader issue of illegal immigration and its impact on communities across the country. He lamented the fact that two of the illegal immigrants arrested were found to be applying for U.S. citizenship and could not be deported due to pending court dates for immigration status.

Moreover, Ivey pointed out that others had previously been deported and had prior felony arrests. He expressed frustration over the lack of deportation for nonviolent crimes, stating that unless a person commits a violent felony, they will not be deported regardless of the number of nonviolent offenses they have committed.
Ivey shared his firsthand observations of the surging influx of illegal immigrants during multiple trips to the U.S. southern border. He attributed this influx to the policies of the Washington, D.C., government, stating that it is a "complete and total failure" on their part not to uphold the laws of the nation.

The sheriff emphasized that this failure is not due to the efforts of law enforcement agencies such as the U.S. Attorney's Office, the Border Patrol, or the Department of Homeland Security. He called for accountability and action from Washington, D.C., to address this issue.
Ivey passionately urged, "Why don’t you allow our Customs and Border Patrol agents to secure our damn border like our laws allow, or get the hell out of the way and I’ll do it with the help of sheriffs from across the country who actually believe in enforcing the law and are sick and tired of this crap."

The arrest of the illegal immigrants in Florida for stealing palmetto berries has ignited a debate over the role of Washington, D.C., in securing the U.S. border and the consequences of illegal immigration. Sheriff Ivey's strong statements have resonated with many who share his concerns about the current situation and the need for effective solutions to address this pressing issue.
