Greg Harden, the influential counselor to some of the greatest athletes in college sports history, including Tom Brady, Michael Phelps, and Desmond Howard, passed away on Thursday at the age of 75.
Former University of Michigan counselor Greg Harden, a respected figure in the world of college athletics, has passed away at the age of 75. Harden's contributions extended far beyond the confines of the athletic department, as he played a pivotal role in shaping the lives and careers of countless student-athletes.
Harden's impact was first felt at Michigan in 1986 when he was hired by legendary football coach Bo Schembechler as a staff consultant and student-athlete personal-development program counselor. It was during this time that he first encountered Desmond Howard, the future Heisman Trophy winner who would become one of Harden's closest confidants.

But it was his relationship with Tom Brady that truly cemented his legacy. Brady, a seven-time Super Bowl champion, credits Harden for his success both on and off the field.
"He meant the world to me, and I could never have had the success I had without the time, energy, love and support he had given me," Brady said.
Harden continued to play a vital role in Michigan's athletic department, advising student-athletes in various sports until his retirement in 2020. He also lent his expertise to the Toronto Maple Leafs as their peak performance coach.
In 2021, Harden published his first book, "Stay Sane in an Insane World: How to Control the Controllables and Thrive," which offered insights into his philosophy on navigating life's challenges.
Harden's passing has left an immeasurable void in the sports world. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the principles he imparted on his students.
Harden is survived by his wife, Lori, and their three children.
