In a significant development, the three inmates accused of killing notorious gangster James "Whitey" Bulger in prison have entered into plea agreements. Fotios "Freddy" Geas, Paul J. DeCologero, and Sean McKinnon were charged with Bulger's murder, which occurred in 2018 at U.S. Penitentiary Hazelton in West Virginia. Now, they await sentencing after executing binding plea agreements.
James "Whitey" Bulger, known for his involvement in numerous murders and criminal activities, was brutally killed in 2018 while imprisoned at U.S. Penitentiary Hazelton. Fotios "Freddy" Geas, Paul J. DeCologero, and Sean McKinnon were subsequently accused of plotting and executing the murder.
On Monday, the accused inmates reached plea agreements, acknowledging their involvement in Bulger's death. The details of these agreements remain undisclosed, and the inmates now await sentencing.
Bulger, once considered one of Boston's most notorious crime bosses, was convicted of 11 murders. He served as an informant for the FBI while simultaneously engaging in criminal activities.
According to prosecutors, Geas and DeCologero delivered the fatal blows to Bulger, while McKinnon acted as the lookout. The attack occurred less than 12 hours after Bulger's transfer to the prison, highlighting the inmates' knowledge of his impending arrival.
In a 2023 court filing, the defendants' lawyers argued that Bulger's status as an "FBI informant" and his "snitching" on competitors made him a target for elimination within the prison system.
Bulger's life and criminal career have been widely documented in books, shows, documentaries, and podcasts. His story has captivated audiences and sparked discussions about the complex nature of crime and its intersection with law enforcement.
In addition to the murder charges, the inmates faced potential death sentences. However, it remains unclear whether prosecutors will seek capital punishment in this case.
The FBI has released hundreds of pages of documents related to Bulger's case, shedding light on his involvement in loan-sharking, horse-racing scams, and his alleged collaboration with corrupt FBI agents.
Despite his criminal notoriety, Bulger is considered by some as a complex figure, involved in both violent acts and acts of cooperation with law enforcement. However, his legacy as a ruthless gangster remains firmly etched in Boston's criminal history.
As the plea agreements mark a significant step in the legal process, the inmates await sentencing, and the details of their involvement in Bulger's murder are expected to be further revealed in court.
