Representatives from the Abrahamic faiths have gathered to advocate for the release of over 100 hostages still held by Hamas, following the October 2023 attack on Israel. Family members of the hostages shared their harrowing experiences and urged for a resolution that will ensure the safety and return of all those in captivity.
An interfaith conference held in New York City on Monday implored world leaders to prioritize the plight of hostages still held in Hamas custody. Speakers from different religious backgrounds emphasized the need for collective action and urged for a deal that would secure the release of the remaining hostages.
Rabbi Joel M. Levenson of the Midway Jewish Center highlighted the shared humanity and values among religious communities, emphasizing the importance of bridging differences and uniting for the common good. He expressed concern over the rise in antisemitism and Islamophobia, calling for a focus on dialogue and understanding.
The forum presented six family members whose loved ones remain hostages of Hamas terrorists. Amidst fear and uncertainty, they shared their experiences and hopes for their loved ones' safe return.
Orna Neutra, mother of hostage Omer Neutra, spoke of the anguish of not knowing the fate of her son since October. She expressed deep concern over the lack of communication and emphasized the need for global attention to the plight of the hostages.
Aviva Siegel, a returning hostage whose American husband Keith remains captive, shared her harrowing ordeal. She described the cruel conditions she experienced, including inhumane treatment and denial of basic necessities. Siegel's account offered a firsthand glimpse into the desperation and suffering inflicted by Hamas on its hostages.
The conference included representatives from the Muslim community, including Salem Alatrash and Sha'ban al-Sayed, whose brothers are among the hostages. They emphasized the shared humanity of both Israeli and Palestinian peoples, condemning Hamas for using its own people as bargaining chips.
Al-Sayed, born in Israel, denounced the divisive tactics of Hamas and highlighted the harmonious coexistence between Muslims and Jews in the Negev region before Hamas took control.
In addressing the faith leaders, Sheikh Musa Drammeh of Daylight Africa urged young people protesting on college campuses to educate themselves about the conflict and Hamas's actions. He emphasized the importance of recognizing the legitimacy of the State of Israel and the need to normalize relations between Israel and the Muslim world.
The conference concluded with a call for global support and action to pressure Hamas into releasing the hostages. Attendees urged governments, interfaith organizations, and individuals to amplify the voices of the victims and their families, demanding a swift and just resolution.
The interfaith conference served as a reminder of the shared values of humanity, compassion, and peace. By bringing together representatives from different faiths and sharing the stories of hostage families, the event sought to inspire collective action and promote a world where all people can live with dignity and freedom.
