Amid rising tensions with Israel, former Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman alleges that Iran is planning a nuclear "Holocaust" against the Jewish state, while former Israeli Brig. Gen. Yossi Kuperwasser claims the Biden administration fears confronting Iran's nuclear ambitions.
In the wake of escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, former Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman has issued a grave warning, claiming that Tehran is planning a nuclear "Holocaust" targeting the Jewish state. Lieberman, now a member of Israel's parliament (Knesset), told Israel's Army Radio that Iran is "planning a Holocaust for us in the next two years."
Lieberman's chilling remarks come amidst a flurry of diplomatic and intelligence activity surrounding Iran's nuclear program. Former Israeli Brig. Gen. (Res.) Yossi Kuperwasser, a former head of the research division in the Israel Defense Force's Military Intelligence, expressed concern that the Biden administration is reluctant to confront Iran's nuclear ambitions.
According to Kuperwasser, "The Biden administration wants to avoid any confrontation with Iran. They are afraid that if they move into confrontation, confrontational Iran may actually move towards having a bomb." He believes Iran may be exploiting this perception and attempting to accelerate its nuclear program.
This week, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) censured Iran for its lack of cooperation with agency inspectors, prompting the Biden administration to join European powers in issuing a joint statement urging Iran to comply with its nuclear obligations. However, the Wall Street Journal reported that the Biden administration had initially sought to dissuade European countries from rebuking Iran at the IAEA, a claim denied by the State Department.
Despite the diplomatic pressure, Iran continues to enrich uranium at levels that are just a short technical step away from weapons-grade purity. An IAEA document obtained by The Associated Press in May revealed that Iran possessed 313.2 pounds of uranium enriched up to 60%, an increase of 45.4 pounds since February.
The Biden administration has faced criticism for not being tough enough on Iran's nuclear program. In late May, Republican Senator Tim Scott and Representative Mike Lawler proposed a resolution calling on the U.N. Security Council to address the issue and reaffirm the U.S. commitment to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
As tensions between Israel and Iran continue to escalate, Lieberman's warning serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of Iran's nuclear ambitions. The international community faces the daunting task of finding a diplomatic solution to this crisis while also confronting the threat posed by Iran's illicit nuclear program.
