Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian's address to the United Nations General Assembly was met with protests and criticism over his claims of being a peacemaker while Iran engages in proxy wars and supports terrorist organizations.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian's speech at the 79th United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday drew protests and criticism for its stark contradictions between claims of peacemaking and Iran's involvement in regional conflicts and support for terrorism.

In his address, Pezeshkian portrayed Iran as a proponent of peace and stability in the Middle East, accusing Israel of supporting terrorism. However, Iran's actions tell a different story. Iran has been deeply involved in proxy wars in Syria and Yemen, fueling division and conflict.

Beyond its involvement in proxy wars, Iran also has a long history of supporting terrorist organizations. Pezeshkian's assertion that Israel supports the Islamic State is not supported by evidence. In contrast, Iran has provided backing to Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, the Taliban, and al Qaeda.

Pezeshkian's claim that Iran seeks security and not insecurity for others is also questionable. Iran's alignment with Russia and North Korea, both of whom have engaged in aggressive actions, suggests otherwise. Iran has also supplied Moscow with drones and ballistic missiles for its war in Ukraine.

Despite his claims of wanting peace for all, Pezeshkian's speech lacked any concrete proposals for resolving conflicts in the Middle East or addressing Iran's own problematic behavior. Instead, he focused on criticizing the United States and calling for the transcendence of past obstacles.

His olive branch to the U.S. is seen by some as an attempt to deflect pressure on Iran's nuclear program and avoid accountability for its support of terrorism. Behnam Ben Taleblu, an Iran expert with the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, believes Pezeshkian's speech was filled with "propaganda" and aimed to appeal to certain audiences in Washington and Europe.

The discrepancy between Pezeshkian's rhetoric and Iran's actions has raised concerns about the regime's genuine intentions. His speech is unlikely to sway many critics or convince the U.S. to ease sanctions on Iran, especially as the country continues to develop its nuclear capabilities.

Pezeshkian's address has highlighted the challenges of addressing the Middle East's complex conflicts and the need for a more honest and constructive dialogue from all sides. Until Iran takes concrete steps to address its own role in fueling regional instability and supporting terrorism, its claims of peacemaking will continue to ring hollow.
