Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian delivered a speech at the United Nations General Assembly, striking a conciliatory tone despite ongoing tensions in the Middle East. He emphasized Iran's desire for peace and stability while criticizing Israel for allegedly seeking a wider conflict.

Iran's newly elected President Masoud Pezeshkian addressed the United Nations General Assembly in New York City on Tuesday, where he attempted to project a less combative stance amidst escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Pezeshkian began his speech by declaring Iran's lack of interest in causing regional instability or engaging in war. He expressed a desire for peaceful coexistence, stating that any wider conflict in the Middle East would have catastrophic consequences for the global community.

"We know more than anyone else that if a larger war were to erupt in the Middle East, it will not benefit anyone throughout the world," Pezeshkian said. "It is Israel that seeks to create this wider conflict."

His remarks come at a time when tensions between the United States and Iran have intensified following the revelation that Iranian hackers had obtained information from the Trump presidential campaign and attempted to distribute it to individuals affiliated with the Biden campaign and media organizations.

Former special operations intel analyst Brett Velicovich highlighted the significance of re-establishing deterrence with Iran to prevent further escalation. Velicovich emphasized the need to address the growing threat posed by Iran's nuclear program and its destabilizing influence in the region.

Meanwhile, former national security official Robert Greenway attributed Iran's recent actions to its perception of Donald Trump's return to power as an existential threat. He pointed to the weakening of sanctions under the Biden administration, which he argued had allowed Iran to significantly expand its nuclear capabilities and increase its oil exports.

Greenway further highlighted the potential involvement of Iran in the alleged hacking of the Trump campaign, suggesting that it was an attempt to influence the US presidential election in favor of Vice President Kamala Harris.

Despite the allegations, former Foreign Policy Research Institute president Aaron Stein downplayed the incident, suggesting it could have been caused by a simple phishing scam. He emphasized Iran's history of conducting cyberattacks and expressed skepticism that they had a preferred candidate in the US race.

Behnam Ben Taleblu, an Iranian expert at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, offered a different perspective, arguing that Iran's goal was to sow discord in the West. He cited the country's previous attempts to interfere in the 2020 US election and its ongoing efforts to promote progressive ideals.

Pezeshkian's speech was seen as an attempt to soften Iran's image and present it as a country seeking peace. However, Taleblu warned that Iran would likely use the opportunity to exploit Western media and generate revenue to fund its nuclear program and military activities.

As Pezeshkian concluded his address, he reiterated Iran's commitment to reaching a nuclear agreement with the West. However, he cautioned that Iran would not succumb to pressure and would use nuclear talks as a shield against further sanctions.
