Jack Black, known for his comedic roles and eccentric personality, recently opened up about his teenage struggles with drug use and how a school therapist helped him turn his life around.
Jack Black's childhood was a whirlwind of experimentation and self-discovery. By the tender age of 13, he was delving into the realm of illicit substances, lured by the allure of heavy metal music and a desire to prove his manhood. Acid and cocaine became his companions, leading him down a perilous path.
Black recalled a particularly harrowing experience with acid. "I remember that night laughing as hard as I'd ever laughed and having this strange feeling of being whole for the first time," he said. However, the bliss soon turned into a terrifying nightmare as the effects refused to subside. "It was so bad that I was locked in this insane brain prison where all I could see was chess pieces going off into infinity playing a game with myself," he described.

Psychedelics led Black to experiment with cocaine, which initially provided a similar rush of euphoria. But the drug's allure was short-lived, leaving him feeling empty and ashamed. "Looking back, it's so embarrassing," he said.
As Black's drug use spiraled, his parents intervened and enrolled him in a school for at-risk youth. It was there that he discovered theater, a lifeline that would ultimately set him on a path to redemption.

"There was a theater teacher named Deb Devine who I latched onto," Black said. "She taught us all improvisation games... and got us all thinking about telling stories." Theater became his outlet for expressing his inner turmoil.
One pivotal moment came in the office of the school's therapist. To Black's surprise, he found himself pouring out his heart about his drug use and the pain he had caused his loved ones. "I just bawled my eyes out," he said.

The therapist's guidance and compassion helped Black confront his demons. He realized that theater was not just a hobby, but a sanctuary where he could heal and grow.
Black's theater teacher encouraged him to transfer to Crossroads, a private school with a renowned theater program. It was there that his journey truly began. He honed his skills, embraced his creativity, and found his tribe among like-minded individuals.

Despite his achievements on screen, theater remains his true home. "The theater and that world will always be the main thing," he said. "The power of creativity... I still remember that captured the power of that creativity."
