Despite a car accident just days before the Paralympics, Jaco van Gass defied the odds to win gold in the men's 3000-meter individual pursuit and set a new world record. This incredible achievement is a testament to his indomitable spirit and unwavering determination, having overcome a rocket-propelled grenade attack in Afghanistan that resulted in the amputation of his left forearm.
Just one week after a harrowing car accident in Paris, South African-British cyclist Jaco van Gass stood on the top step of the Paralympic podium, having triumphed in the men's 3000-meter individual pursuit. Moreover, he shattered the world record in a performance that defied all expectations.
Days before the fateful event, van Gass was struck by a car while training, leaving him with a severe head wound and bruised knee. His hopes of defending his Paralympic gold medal appeared dashed. Yet, driven by an unwavering spirit, he refused to succumb to despair.

Undergoing scans and receiving prompt medical attention, van Gass's determination propelled him back onto the track just a day later. Despite the lingering pain, he knew deep within him that he could conquer this adversity.
The day of the final arrived, and van Gass faced his teammate, Fin Graham, in a tense duel. Summoning every ounce of strength, he surged ahead, setting a blistering pace. Crossing the finish line, he had not only claimed gold but also etched his name in the history books with a record-breaking time.

"I wasn't worried about the cuts, but my knee was really badly bruised," van Gass recounted. "But within two days, I was back on the bike. I did a session at the velodrome, and then I knew I'd be okay. After all, it was only a Renault!"
The road to Paralympic glory has been a treacherous one for van Gass. As a member of the UK parachute regiment in the 2000s, he endured the horrors of war in Afghanistan. In 2009, tragedy struck when he was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade, losing his left forearm.

Undeterred, van Gass underwent 11 operations and later embarked on a series of extreme athletic feats. He scaled a polar ice cap, skied down mountains, ran marathons, and cycled relentlessly. His Paralympic debut in Tokyo in 2021 marked a significant milestone, but he yearned for something more.
"When I stood on that podium in Tokyo and looked at those empty stands, I wanted to do it with my family here, and now I have," he said. "That was a decision I made three years ago, to focus on the training and not go off on crazy adventures and stuff."
Even a car accident could not extinguish his burning desire. With his family cheering him on, van Gass triumphed in Paris, proving that the human spirit can overcome any obstacle.
His story is a testament to the resilience and triumph that can be achieved through adversity. From the battlefields of Afghanistan to the cycling velodrome in Paris, Jaco van Gass's journey is an inspiration to us all.
