Despite a strong preseason, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts had a shaky start to the regular season in the team's victory over the Green Bay Packers. While he threw for 278 yards and two touchdowns, several turnovers and questionable decisions raised concerns about potential carryover issues from last season's struggles.

Jalen Hurts' highly anticipated Opening Night performance was a tale of two halves. The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback, fresh off a disappointing 2023 season, looked impressive during the preseason, but his first-quarter struggles against the Green Bay Packers brought back some unsettling memories.

Hurts' first four snaps were particularly worrisome, including an incompletion, an interception, a 1-yard pass, and a fumble. While he settled down and played well for the majority of the game, the early mistakes cast a shadow over his overall performance.

Despite the strong finish, Hurts' shaky start raised questions about his comfort level in the new offense installed by Offensive Coordinator Kellen Moore. Last season, he often looked uncomfortable in Brian Johnson's scheme, and his struggles in the pocket raised concerns that the issue may persist.

Hurts' ineffective runs (13 carries for 33 yards) were another cause for concern. His ability to scramble and extend plays was a key component of his MVP-caliber 2022 season, but he lacked that same explosiveness against the Packers. NFC scouts noted that his runs seemed more panicked and less purposeful, a worrying trend from last season's struggles.

Adding to the concerns was Hurts' turnover issues, a recurring problem from the second half of 2023. He turned the ball over twice in the first eight minutes against the Packers, reminiscent of his six turnovers (five interceptions and one lost fumble) in the final seven games of last season.

Eagles Coach Nick Sirianni downplayed the turnovers, but they served as a reminder of the struggles Hurts faced under Johnson's offense. Sirianni fired Johnson and brought in Moore specifically to address those issues, but it remains to be seen if the new coordinator can help Hurts become more comfortable and decisive in the pocket.

Moore acknowledged that his play-calling was aggressive, but he expressed confidence that Hurts can adjust and improve moving forward. The quarterback's performance under pressure was encouraging, but his struggles when facing less pressure were a cause for concern.

Hurts' performance was overall solid, and he put up respectable numbers. However, the expectations for him are much higher than simply being "good." As the ninth-highest-paid quarterback in the league, he needs to do more to dispel concerns about a carryover from last season's struggles.

The Eagles have a talented roster and have made significant upgrades to their offense, but Hurts' ability to lead them to another championship-caliber season rests heavily on his shoulders. He needs to prove that the shaky Opening Night performance was an aberration and that he can overcome the issues that plagued him last season.
