Former Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce has apologized for his steroid accusations against Secretariat, the legendary racehorse who won the Triple Crown in 1973.

Kelce made the controversial remarks on the May 8 edition of the "New Heights" podcast, which he co-hosts with his brother Travis Kelce. Citing Secretariat's speed records, Kelce claimed that the horse was "juiced to the gills."

He later doubled down on his claim, suggesting that Secretariat's "unparalleled muscular stature" and death from an enlarged heart raised concerns.

"But the fact this horse had unparalleled muscular stature and died with an enlarged heart, and raced at a time when steroids were extremely prevalent, without adequate testing, raises flags in my book," Kelce wrote in a social media post.

However, Kelce later walked back his claims, apologizing for his comments.

"I'm sorry everyone, wasn't trying to get people riled up," Kelce wrote on X, formerly Twitter, May 9.

He added that it was "unfair to assume these things publicly."

"I really thought it was just known that in the 70s steroid use was rampant," Kelce wrote. "I'm not trying to take away from Secretariat's, or anyone from that era's legacy. You're right, without proof it is unfair to assume these things publicly, I apologize."

Kelce's apology came after his initial comments drew widespread criticism. Many fans and experts argued that there was no evidence to support Kelce's claims, and that he was unfairly tarnishing the legacy of a great horse.

Secretariat's speed records have stood for more than half a century, and he is widely considered one of the greatest racehorses of all time. His Triple Crown victory in 1973 remains one of the most iconic moments in American horse racing history.
