After four years leading the Washington Commanders, Jason Wright is stepping down as president, marking the conclusion of an unprecedented era for the franchise. Wright, who became the NFL's first Black team president in 2020, will remain in an advisory role during the search for his successor.
Washington Commanders president Jason Wright is set to conclude his tenure with the franchise after four transformative years, leaving behind a legacy of change and progress. The Commanders confirmed Wright's departure on Thursday, indicating that he will continue in a senior advisory capacity while the organization seeks his replacement.
In 2020, Wright was appointed to the helm of the Commanders, becoming the first Black president in NFL history. His arrival coincided with a tumultuous period for the franchise, facing allegations of a toxic work culture and ongoing controversies surrounding former owner Dan Snyder.

Wright immediately emerged as a catalyst for change, collaborating with then-head coach Ron Rivera to navigate the organization through a comprehensive rebranding effort. The result was the adoption of the new team name, Commanders, signifying a fresh start for the franchise.
Under Wright's leadership, the Commanders prioritized rebuilding trust with fans and reconnecting with the community. The team's fan base witnessed a resurgence in enthusiasm, with attendance numbers and merchandise sales reaching new heights.
Wright also spearheaded the pursuit of a new stadium site and naming rights deal. The team's current lease at the former FedEx Field expires in 2027, and Wright played a key role in exploring potential locations and partnerships.
When the Harris ownership group acquired the Commanders from Snyder in 2023, Wright maintained his position, serving as a bridge during the transition. Harris praised Wright's invaluable contributions, saying, "He has led this organization through an incredible transformation that set the stage for everything that is to come."
In his farewell statement, Wright expressed pride in the accomplishments achieved during his tenure. "We have taken this franchise through a period of immense challenge and uncertainty and have transformed it," he said. "We've set the table for an incredibly bright future under Josh's leadership."
Wright's departure marks the end of an era for the Commanders, as the organization embarks on a new chapter under the guidance of its new ownership group. His legacy as the trailblazing first Black NFL team president will continue to inspire and challenge the industry, fostering a more inclusive and equitable future for professional football.
