Despite recent health setbacks, Jay Leno and Mavis Leno remain resilient and deeply connected, sharing insights into their 44-year marriage and the enduring power of love and support.
As Jay Leno and his wife, Mavis, attended the Feminist Majority Foundation's 16th Annual Global Women's Rights Awards Gala, they exuded a warmth and resilience that belied the challenges they had faced in recent years. In an interview with Fox News Digital, the couple shared their unwavering bond and how they have navigated difficult times together.
"All of that," Leno said, referring to his burn accident in November 2022 and Mavis's advanced dementia diagnosis, when asked how faith and family have sustained them. "Exactly. It's the whole thing. We've been married 44 years. It gets easier. It doesn't get harder."
Mavis's declining health necessitated Jay's appointment as her conservator in April, a legal measure to protect her interests. "She lacks the necessary capacity to execute the estate plan" due to her condition, court documents stated. Despite these hurdles, Leno emphasized that their relationship remained strong and grounded.
"We do everything together," said Leno. "I go home every night, make dinner, and sit around. We enjoy each other's company." Their commitment to each other was evident as they held hands and shared affectionate glances throughout the evening.
Leno and Mavis first met at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles in the 1970s, before Leno's rise to stardom. They married in 1980 and have remained a devoted couple without children. Asked about their upcoming 45th wedding anniversary, Leno replied, "I haven't thought about that. It'll be similar to the 43rd and the 44th."
While acknowledging the difficulties of marriage, Leno emphasized the importance of aligning with the right partner. "Marry your conscience. Marry the person you wish you could be," he once advised Drew Barrymore during her appearance on "The Tonight Show." "That's kind of how you stay married for 44 years."
Despite his comedic demeanor, Leno's emotions were palpable as he spoke about his wife during the gala. "I had to smile when I saw that young college girl come out, which reminded me of a young girl I met," he said, referring to Mavis. "She had the same fire. A couple weeks later, I told a story of picking up the front page of a paper with a picture of her [Mavis]. [I thought] this is going to be a fascinating relationship, and it has been."
With a twinkle in his eye, Leno added, "People say marriage is difficult. I don't get it. I enjoy her company. I enjoy taking care of her. We have fun. She's the most independent woman I ever knew. Again, I just couldn't be prouder of her."
Their unwavering love for each other was evident in their tender gestures and the way they complemented each other. "I am part of her legacy and that's what I'm proudest of," Leno concluded.
As the couple left the gala, they walked hand-in-hand, a testament to their enduring love and the ability of the human spirit to triumph over adversity. Their story serves as an inspiration to all who seek to build strong and resilient relationships amidst life's inevitable challenges.
