Washington Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels proved he's more suited for the gridiron than the baseball diamond with an errant first pitch at Nationals Park.

Washington Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels received the opportunity to throw out the first pitch at Nationals Park on Sunday and demonstrated why he should stick to football.

Daniels, who was drafted 2nd overall in the 2024 draft, stepped onto the mound before the Washington Nationals took on the Atlanta Braves. The 6-foot-3 Heisman Trophy winner went into his wind-up and sent the ball bouncing towards the right of the catcher. The ball almost ended up in the hands of Commanders mascot Major Tuddy.

Fortunately, no one expected Daniels to deliver strikes on the diamond.

The Commanders selected Daniels in the first round of the 2024 draft after he enjoyed a standout season at LSU. In his final year with the Tigers, he threw for 3,812 yards and 40 touchdown passes, earning him high praise and one of the top picks in the draft.

Offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury has been overseeing Daniels' development during organized team activities (OTAs) in recent weeks. These sessions mark the beginning of a long journey for Daniels as he prepares to take over as the starting quarterback in 2024.

"As we're getting started, it's like a big passing camp," said Commanders head coach Dan Quinn. "For the quarterbacks, they're getting some really good looks."

Quinn has been impressed with Daniels' progress and his competitive nature, noting his "command" and "learning" ability.

"What jumps off the tape is the competitive nature and the learning and the command that he has already," said Quinn. "That's something that speaks to his work ethic."

Daniels has been putting in the work during OTAs, but he still has a long way to go before he's ready to lead the Commanders on the field. The team finished with a dismal 4-13 record last season, and Daniels is expected to play a key role in turning things around.

The young quarterback will have plenty of opportunities to improve his game during training camp and the preseason. If he can continue to impress and develop, he could become a valuable asset for the Commanders.

In the meantime, Daniels should probably stick to football and leave the pitching to the professionals.
