Jerry Seinfeld has publicly apologized to Howard Stern for questioning his comedy chops during a podcast interview. The comments went viral, prompting Seinfeld to issue a statement begging for Stern's forgiveness.
Stern broke his silence a week after Seinfeld's apology, revealing how he learned of the comments and how they impacted him. Stern said he was scrolling through Google News when he came across a headline that said Seinfeld had called him an interviewer who wasn't a comedian.
Stern said he was confused by the comments, as he considered Seinfeld a personal friend. He reached out to Seinfeld's wife, Jessica, who in turn shared the news with Stern's wife, Beth. Stern also revealed that he had recently spoken to Seinfeld, which made the comments that much more perplexing.
Stern said he had called Seinfeld to ask if he was okay due to anti-Israel protesters attending his events. He said they had a nice conversation, but the comments still left him puzzled.
After Stern read the article, he said he immediately called Seinfeld, who apologized profusely. Seinfeld said he had meant to say that Stern was surrounded by comedians, but he had misspoken and said "outflanked," which sounded terrible and insulting.
Stern said he accepted Seinfeld's apology, adding that he had made his own share of questionable remarks on air in the past. He also said that he was willing to forgive Seinfeld, especially after the actor "apologized for a really long time."
Seinfeld also issued a public apology to Stern, telling Page Six that he was deeply remorseful for how he had phrased things. He said he meant to say that Stern must feel surrounded by comedians, but he had said "outflanked," which sounded terrible and insulting.
Seinfeld added that he still loved Stern and hoped he would forgive him.
