In a historic breakthrough for female representation in hockey, Jessica Campbell has become the first woman to be hired as a full-time NHL assistant coach, joining the Seattle Kraken's bench.

History was made this week in the NHL as the Seattle Kraken appointed Jessica Campbell as their full-time assistant coach, marking a pivotal moment for gender equality in the sport. Campbell's appointment not only makes her the first woman to hold this historic position but also solidifies her as a trailblazing pioneer in the hockey world.

Campbell brings a wealth of experience to the Kraken's bench, having spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach for the Seattle Kraken's AHL affiliate in Coachella Valley alongside head coach Dan Bylsma. Bylsma, who was hired in late May to take over the head coaching reins with the Kraken, expressed his confidence in Campbell's abilities.

"Jessica and I spent the last two years coaching in Coachella Valley," said Bylsma. "I’m confident of what she can do for our staff and bring to the players. I watched her build strong relationships with prospects…She has the ability to relate to players about their games and what they bring to a team. She’s demonstrated that over the last two seasons…That’s why she is such an appealing candidate and why she’s joining our staff."

Campbell's ability to forge strong relationships with players was a crucial factor in her hiring. Bylsma emphasized the importance of this aspect in her role. "I’m looking forward to continuing to work with her at the NHL level."

Campbell's journey to this historic moment has been marked by an unwavering passion for hockey. A former college hockey standout at Cornell, she went on to compete in the Canadian Women's Hockey League for three seasons. Her playing career was highlighted by a gold medal victory at the Women's U18 World Championships in 2010. In 2017, Campbell retired from playing and founded the player development brand JC Powerskating, dedicated to empowering young hockey players.

Prior to joining the Coachella Valley Firebirds, Campbell made history as the first full-time female assistant coach in the AHL. She also had a one-game stint as an assistant on the Kraken bench for a preseason game against Calgary in September.

Emily Engel-Natzke was hired by the Washington Capitals in 2022 as a video coach, making her the first woman with a full-time assistant role in the league. However, Campbell's appointment as a full-time assistant coach marks an even greater stride forward for female representation in the NHL.

The Kraken open their season on Oct. 8 against the St. Louis Blues, with Campbell poised to make her NHL regular season debut behind the bench. After narrowly missing the playoffs last season, the Kraken are eager to make a statement this season, with Campbell's contributions expected to play a significant role in their success.

Jessica Campbell's appointment as the first full-time female NHL assistant coach is a testament to her skill, dedication, and passion for the sport. Her historic achievement serves as an inspiration for young female hockey players everywhere, demonstrating that with hard work and determination, anything is possible.
