Despite a motivational speech from Derek Jeter, the Michigan Wolverines' offense struggled in a lopsided defeat to Texas, sparking concerns about Davis Warren and the team's ability to defend their national championship.

The Michigan Wolverines entered the 2023 season with high hopes after winning their first national championship since 1997. Ancak, a disappointing performance against unranked Texas has raised concerns about the team's offense and the leadership of quarterback Davis Warren.

In an attempt to inspire the team, the Wolverines brought in New York Yankees Hall of Famer Derek Jeter to give a locker-room speech the night before Saturday's game. Jeter, who led the Yankees to five World Series championships, shared his experiences and advice on staying on top as a defending champion.

However, despite Jeter's motivational words, the Wolverines' offense looked sluggish and uninspired against the Longhorns. Warren struggled to find a rhythm, completing only 14 of 32 passes for 184 yards and an interception. The running game was equally ineffective, with Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards combining for just 93 yards on 26 carries.

The result was a humbling 31-12 defeat, marking the end of the Wolverines' 33-game regular-season winning streak and their most lopsided regular-season loss since 2020.

"We didn't play well enough today," Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh said after the game. "We have to give Texas credit, they played a great game. But we're not going to make excuses, we didn't execute and we have to get better."

Warren's performance was particularly concerning, as he failed to show the same poise and accuracy that he did in Michigan's season-opening win over Fresno State. The sophomore quarterback looked indecisive and struggled to read the defense, leading to several negative plays and turnovers.

"Davis is a very talented player, but he's still learning and growing," Harbaugh said. "We have confidence in him, but he needs to take the next step and play more consistently."

The Wolverines' struggles on offense come amidst a season of distractions and off-field issues. The program is still under investigation for alleged illegal sign stealing by former staffer Connor Stalions, and head coach Jim Harbaugh is facing a four-year show cause order from the NCAA for impermissible contact with recruits during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With a challenging schedule ahead, including upcoming games against No. 13 USC and No. 1 Ohio State, the Wolverines need to find a way to improve their offense and regain their form from last season. Davis Warren will be at the center of that effort, and his performance in the coming weeks will be crucial to Michigan's hopes of repeating as national champions.
