First Lady Jill Biden embarked on a round-trip flight from France to Delaware on Friday, costing taxpayers an estimated tens of thousands of dollars, to attend her stepson Hunter's gun trial.
First Lady Jill Biden's brief visit to the United States to support her stepson, Hunter Biden, during his gun trial has raised questions about the cost implications for taxpayers. Biden flew from France to Delaware on Friday, accompanied by a Secret Service detail and staff, then returned to Europe on Saturday, all while President Biden continued his official visit to France.
The modified Boeing 747s that serve as the iconic Air Force One cost approximately $200,000 per hour to fly, while Air Force Two, often used by first ladies, can cost tens of thousands of dollars per hour. Biden's one-day round-trip flight is estimated to have incurred significant expenses.
The first lady has attended the trial every day this week except Thursday, demonstrating her support for Hunter, who is accused of lying about his drug addiction on a form he filled out to buy a gun in 2018. The prosecution has rested its case, and the defense is expected to present at least one more witness before closing arguments.
Hunter Biden has pleaded not guilty to the charges, and his defense team is considering whether to call him to the stand as a witness. Brian Claypool, a criminal defense attorney, joined Fox News Live to discuss the potential risks and rewards of such a move.
Biden's attendance at the trial has sparked criticism from some quarters, who argue that it raises ethical concerns and could potentially influence the outcome. Others have defended Biden's right to support her stepson during a difficult time.
The White House has not publicly commented on the first lady's trip to Delaware. President Biden is not expected to attend the trial, which is scheduled to resume on Monday with closing arguments.
Meanwhile, Jill Biden's comments about her close relationship with Hunter have drawn attention. In a 2022 interview, she referred to herself as Hunter's "mom," highlighting the familial bond between them.
The gun trial against Hunter Biden has brought to light evidence of his struggles with addiction, as well as the complexities of his relationship with his famous father. The verdict in the case is expected to be closely watched, both for its legal implications and its potential political fallout.
