Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love's one-year extension expires in 2024, and his representatives are expected to push for a deal similar to the one Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff recently signed.
Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love is entering a pivotal season as he begins contract extension talks with the team. Love, a 2020 first-round draft pick, is only tied to the Packers through the 2024 season after signing a one-year extension last May.
As the Packers kicked off Organized Team Activities (OTAs) this week, Love's presence signaled his commitment to the team and his desire to secure a long-term deal. "That's just something that I've always done, trying to be here, get the reps in, get the work in with the guys and just start building that chemistry and getting ready for the season," Love said.
Love's steady improvement throughout the 2023 season will bolster his leverage in contract negotiations. Last season, he threw 21 touchdown passes with only one interception during a nine-game stretch, showcasing his potential. His representatives could push for a deal comparable to the four-year, $212 million extension Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff recently signed.
However, Love remained tight-lipped about the status of his contract talks. "I don't really know what's going on, but we'll see," Love told reporters.
Head coach Matt LaFleur credited Love's presence for the high attendance at this week's voluntary workouts. "We've had almost 100% the entire offseason, which has been the best that we've had since I've been here," LaFleur said.
Despite his impressive regular season performance, Love threw two costly interceptions in the Divisional Round loss to the San Francisco 49ers. He acknowledged the need to learn from those mistakes and move forward. "It's something that's always with you. But at the end of the day, that's what you've got to do, is you've got to learn from it, be able to watch it, break it down, see what went wrong, learn from it, and grow and move on."
The Packers are confident in Love's ability to build on last season's success. His presence has fostered a positive atmosphere within the team, prompting LaFleur to say, "When your quarterback's there, it just naturally has a way of attracting everybody to come."
Love's contract extension negotiations are expected to dominate headlines over the next several months. His performance in the upcoming season will significantly impact his market value and the Packers' willingness to commit to a long-term deal.
The Packers' offense will once again be led by Aaron Rodgers in 2024, but Love's future with the franchise remains uncertain. If he can continue his upward trend and avoid costly turnovers, he could cement his status as the Packers' quarterback of the future.
