New York Mets pitcher Jorge López claims the media misconstrued his comments after an outburst following a loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The team is reportedly set to designate López for assignment.
After leaving the mound following an ejection in the Mets' loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday, pitcher Jorge López appeared to blame the media for misconstruing his words when he was allegedly overheard saying the Mets were "the worst team in probably the whole f---ing MLB."
However, López has since taken to Instagram to clarify his remarks, stating that he was referring to himself as the worst teammate.
"Who ever hear me I said teammate and what I said on the situation I been the worst teammate," López wrote. "Thanks media for make it worse."
The Mets' loss to the Dodgers marked the completion of a sweep by their division rivals. The score was tied 3-3 before the Dodgers scored six runs in the eighth inning.
Following the Dodgers' surge, López was ejected by third base umpire Ramon De Jesus after arguing a check swing called a ball.
As López exited the field, he untucked his jersey and hurled his glove over the protective netting and into the stands. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza condemned López's behavior, calling it "unacceptable" and stating that the team would handle the matter internally.
According to reports, López was set to be designated for assignment (DFA).
In his postgame comments, López reportedly made the critical remarks about his team, according to SNY.
López, a one-time All-Star, has made 28 relief appearances for the Mets this season. He has a 3.76 ERA with 19 strikeouts and two saves.
