Two Maine jurors played a heroic role in recapturing an escaped child abuser who had fled the Somerset County Courthouse on Wednesday, as captured on a security video. Nicholas Carter, 31, convicted of assaulting a 14-month-old, attempted to evade authorities after his conviction but was swiftly apprehended across the street with the assistance of these vigilant jurors.
A shocking incident unfolded outside the Somerset County Courthouse in Maine on Wednesday, captured on video, where a convicted child abuser attempted to escape custody after a three-day trial. Nicholas Carter, 31, had been found guilty of assaulting a 14-month-old and was not escorted to jail by authorities. Instead, he made a desperate attempt to flee the courtroom, triggering a chase.
The video footage captured by security cameras shows a bald-headed Carter sprinting through the courthouse hallway, down a lobby staircase, and out the door with two plainclothes officers in hot pursuit. As he emerged outside, a group of officers and bystanders gave chase, with Carter eventually tripping and falling on his face across the street.

Two bystanders, who later turned out to be jurors, swiftly pounced on Carter and held him until deputies arrived. It remains unclear if the jurors were involved in Carter's case or a different matter.
Carter's escape attempt, which was thwarted by the quick-thinking jurors, marks the second security breach at the courthouse this year. In April, an officer in the courtroom deployed a Taser to stop a man who charged the killer of his sister, who had been convicted of stabbing her 99 times. The man was escorted out of the courtroom but will not face prosecution.

According to the Morning Sentinel, Carter had been out on bail before his conviction. Jail records indicate that he was back in custody by 2:18 p.m. on the day of his escape. The slippery child abuser stands 5 feet, 7 inches tall and weighs only 150 pounds.
Carter has not yet been sentenced for the assault conviction and is expected to face additional charges related to his escape attempt. This incident highlights the need for heightened security measures at courthouses to prevent similar incidents from occurring.
