A jury has been selected in the federal corruption trial of Democratic Senator Bob Menendez of New Jersey, who is accused of accepting bribes in exchange for official favors. The trial is expected to be lengthy, with opening statements taking up to three hours and a witness list that includes potential high-profile figures.
A jury has been seated in the highly anticipated federal corruption trial of New Jersey Democratic Senator Bob Menendez, who faces charges related to an alleged bribery scheme involving two businessmen.
The jury of 12 members and six alternates was selected on Wednesday and immediately began hearing opening statements in the case. The trial is expected to last several weeks, with prosecutors alleging that Menendez engaged in a conspiracy with Fred Daibes and Wael Hana to influence criminal investigations and benefit the governments of Egypt and Qatar.
In her opening statement, prosecutor Lara Pomerantz outlined the government's case, stating that Menendez "put his power up for sale" in exchange for personal gain. According to Pomerantz, Daibes provided Menendez and his wife with gold bars worth over $50,000 each and other valuables, while Hana arranged for the senator to receive cash and a Mercedes-Benz convertible.
Pomerantz presented evidence that Daibes' fingerprints and DNA were found on multiple cash envelopes seized during the investigation. She also claimed that Menendez sent text messages and emails that documented the alleged scheme in detail.
Menendez's attorney, Avi Weitzman, countered the prosecution's claims in his own opening statement, portraying the senator as "an American patriot" who was not acting as a "foreign agent." Weitzman argued that the evidence against Menendez was circumstantial and that the prosecution's theory of the case was flawed.
The trial is the second time in a decade that Menendez has been accused of corruption. He was previously charged in 2015, but those charges were ultimately dismissed.
The jury will now hear from witnesses, who are expected to include high-ranking government officials, political operatives, and individuals involved in the alleged scheme. The witness list includes several sitting U.S. senators, including potential vice presidential contenders David Axelrod, Lindsey Graham, and Tim Scott.
The trial is being closely watched by political observers, as it could have implications for Menendez's future career and the broader political landscape in New Jersey. The senator has maintained his innocence and vowed to fight the charges.
The jury has been instructed to weigh the evidence carefully and to render a fair and impartial verdict based on the facts presented in court. The outcome of the trial could have significant consequences for both Menendez and the broader political system in the United States.
