Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito has come under fire from media pundits, Democratic lawmakers, and legal experts following reports that an upside-down American flag and a "Stop the Steal" flag were flown outside his home in the weeks following the January 6th Capitol riot. The display has raised concerns about Alito's impartiality in cases related to former President Donald Trump and the January 6th investigation.

MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell argued that the upside-down flag, a symbol used by Trump supporters who falsely claim the 2020 election was stolen, was a signal from the Supreme Court to lower courts that "this is what you can get away with."

Late-night host Stephen Colbert compared Alito to a Nazi, saying that flying an "insurrection flag" was not a justifiable response to insults from a neighbor. Colbert also criticized Alito's alleged sympathy for the January 6th rioters, calling it "a horrible signal" to other judges.

Another symbol associated with Trump supporters, the "Appeal to Heaven" flag, was reportedly seen flying at a beach home owned by Alito in New Jersey. The flag, which dates back to the Revolutionary War, is also associated with a desire for a Christian government.

MSNBC's Joy Reid labeled Alito a "lawless individual" and a "clear Christian nationalist." CNN's Norm Eisen said the Supreme Court was "in an absolute ethics crisis" due to the Alito revelations.

New York Times opinion columnist Michelle Goldberg questioned how Alito could be considered impartial in cases related to Trump's "Stop the Steal" efforts, given his apparent support for the movement.

Mark Joseph Stern, a senior writer for Slate, compared the Supreme Court to the British monarchy, arguing that Alito's actions had shattered the implicit contract of dignity and honor that justices are expected to uphold.

Several Democratic lawmakers have called for Alito to recuse himself from cases related to Trump. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez demanded a Senate investigation into Alito's conduct.

The co-hosts of "The View" also criticized Alito and the Supreme Court for ethics concerns, with co-host Joy Behar calling for the elimination of lifetime appointments.

John Bolton, a former National Security Adviser under Trump, defended Alito's flag display, saying it was not controversial to him and suggesting that liberals were targeting Alito unfairly.

However, many legal experts have argued that Alito's display of the controversial flags could undermine the public's trust in the Supreme Court's impartiality.

The Supreme Court has not yet commented on the matter.
