Justin Fields, the Chicago Bears' dynamic quarterback, has dismissed rumors suggesting he might participate in kick-return duties for the Pittsburgh Steelers next season.

The speculation arose after Steelers running back Jaylen Warren mentioned on teammate Cam Heyward's podcast that special teams coordinator Danny Smith had floated the idea of utilizing Fields as a returner during kickoffs. However, Fields quickly clarified the situation, emphasizing that Smith's comments were taken out of context.

"Nah, I think everybody kind of interpreted it wrong," Fields told The Post-Gazette. "Coach Danny was basically just trying to send a message that no matter who you are, you could be on special teams. He just used that as an example."

Fields attributed the media frenzy surrounding his potential role as a returner to the overly serious nature of social media. "It's funny how serious social media takes everything," he said. "It was kind of funny to me when everybody was making a big deal about it for no reason."

The 25-year-old quarterback further elaborated that the Steelers' coaching staff did not intend to assign him to return duties. "I'm not here to do that," Fields stated. "I'm here to play quarterback."

Fields' emphatic response reflects his primary focus on establishing himself as a starting quarterback. After being traded to the Steelers from the Chicago Bears in March, Fields expressed his determination to compete for the starting position behind presumed starter Russell Wilson.

"I'm definitely competing," Fields said. "Russ knows that. We're competing against each other every day."

Fields' aspiration to be the Steelers' starting quarterback aligns with the NFL's recent rule changes aimed at increasing the safety of kickoffs. These modifications have inadvertently made kickoff returns less frequent and impactful.

Nevertheless, Fields understands the importance of special teams play and believes all players should be prepared to contribute in any capacity. "I think every player should be willing to do whatever it takes to help the team win," he said. "If that means playing special teams, then so be it."

Fields' dedication to the Steelers' organization is evident in his eagerness to contribute in any way possible. However, his primary focus remains on showcasing his abilities as a quarterback and guiding the team to success. With his athleticism and determination, Fields is poised to make a significant impact on the Steelers' offense while also being a valuable asset on special teams when called upon.
