Justin Fields to Lead Steelers Against Chargers as Wilson's Return Remains Uncertain

Justin Fields is expected to make his third straight start at quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers, as Russell Wilson continues to recover from a calf injury.

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin announced Tuesday that Justin Fields will practice with the starters early in the week, while Russell Wilson remains sidelined with a calf injury. Tomlin stated that there has been no change in Wilson's status and that the Steelers are planning to have Fields start against the unbeaten Chargers (2-0).

Fields has played error-free football in his first two starts, helping guide the Steelers to their first 2-0 start since 2020. He has yet to throw an interception and has effectively used his legs to extend plays and convert third downs.

Tomlin praised Fields' demeanor and leadership, noting that he brings a quiet confidence and clear communication to the offense. During the Steelers' victory over Denver on Sunday, Tomlin asked Fields to give a pep talk to the offense, demonstrating his trust in the young quarterback.

While Wilson's return is uncertain, Tomlin indicated that left guard Isaac Seumalo is progressing towards playing. The veteran has missed the first two games with a pectoral injury, with Spencer Anderson filling in capably.

The Steelers will host officials in practice this week to address the issue of penalties, which has been a problem through the first two games. Flags have wiped out impactful plays, including a short touchdown pass from Fields to wide receiver George Pickens.

Second-year right tackle Broderick Jones was penalized three times in his brief stint on Sunday, leading to rookie Troy Fautanu taking over the majority of snaps at the position. Tomlin expressed confidence in Jones' ability to rebound from his performance.

The Steelers' defense has been solid in the first two games, but they will face a significant challenge against the Chargers' high-powered offense led by quarterback Justin Herbert. Pittsburgh will need to generate pressure on Herbert and force him into mistakes.

On the offensive side, the Steelers will look to build on their strong start under Fields' leadership. They will need to establish a consistent running game and protect Fields from the Chargers' pass rush.

The Steelers are seeking their third straight victory on Sunday, which would put them in a strong position heading into their Week 4 matchup against the New York Jets. A win over the Chargers would further cement Fields' status as the Steelers' starting quarterback for the foreseeable future.
