After a disappointing debut for the Chiefs in last season's opener, Kadarius Toney has found a new home on the Cleveland Browns' practice squad.
Cleveland has taken a step towards bolstering their wide receiver depth by signing former Kansas City wideout Kadarius Toney to their practice squad. Toney joins a talented veteran group that includes Amari Cooper and Jerry Jeudy in an offense looking to improve after a disappointing showing in their season opener against Dallas.
Toney's time with the Chiefs was marked by both flashes of brilliance and controversy. He made a splash in the Super Bowl LVII win over Philadelphia with a touchdown catch and a crucial 65-yard punt return. However, he also came under fire for several high-profile drops and missed assignments.
During the 2023-24 regular season, Toney's absence during the final three weeks, including the Super Bowl run, raised questions about the legitimacy of his injury. The dispute ultimately led to his release from Kansas City during the 2024 preseason.
In Cleveland, Toney will seek to revive his career and contribute to a struggling offense. The Browns managed just 230 total yards in their home loss to Dallas, with most of that production coming in garbage time.
Toney's addition is a low-risk, high-reward move for the Browns. If he can overcome his past struggles and regain his form, he has the potential to provide a much-needed spark to the offense. However, his inconsistent performance and off-field issues make it difficult to predict how he will fit into the team.
The Browns' wide receiver room is already well-stocked with Cooper and Jeudy. Cooper is a three-time Pro Bowler with over 9,000 career receiving yards, while Jeudy is a former Alabama standout who had a breakout season with the Broncos in 2019.
Toney's signing does not guarantee him a roster spot, but it gives him an opportunity to prove his worth. If he can impress during practice and preseason games, he could earn a spot on the Browns' active roster and add depth to a position that has been a weakness for the team in recent years.
Only time will tell if Toney can turn his career around in Cleveland. However, the Browns' addition of the talented but enigmatic wide receiver adds intrigue to an offense that is in need of a spark.
