Despite the recent decline in arrests at the US-Mexico border, Vice President Kamala Harris has faced criticism for her perceived lack of engagement with the ongoing immigration crisis. Former Georgia Rep. Doug Collins, Fox News contributor Marc Thiessen, and former DNC deputy press secretary Jose Aristimuno debate her shifting policy positions and the potential impact on her political future.
The Biden administration has hailed the recent drop in arrests at the southern border as a victory for its immigration policies. However, detractors argue that the decline is a seasonal phenomenon and fails to address the broader issues of illegal immigration.
According to The New York Times, arrests at the border have fallen below 60,000 for the first time since President Biden took office, prompting cautious optimism from the Department of Homeland Security. However, the Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI) dismisses the reduced figures as an attempt by the Biden administration to disguise its lack of action on border security.

IRLI Director of Investigations Matt O'Brien attributed the drop in arrests to seasonal factors and highlighted the Biden administration's programs facilitating asylum seekers' entry into the US. He accused the administration of engaging in "the biggest illegal alien smuggling operation in history" through its CBP One app.
Despite Vice President Kamala Harris' initial assignment to address the root causes of Central American migration, her involvement has waned in recent months. She has not visited the southern border or Central America since January 2022, a move that has drawn criticism from Republicans.

Former Georgia Rep. Doug Collins expressed concern about her absence and questioned her commitment to resolving the border crisis. Fox News contributor Marc Thiessen argued that her shifting policy positions and lack of border experience could damage her credibility as a potential presidential candidate in 2024.
Former DNC deputy press secretary Jose Aristimuno defended Harris' record, stating that she had made progress in addressing the underlying factors driving migration from Central America. He emphasized the challenges of tackling such a complex issue and argued that Republicans were politicizing the situation.

The debate over Harris' handling of the border crisis is expected to continue as the Biden administration faces pressure to address the ongoing challenges at the southern border. The political implications of her perceived absence from the issue could also loom large as the 2024 presidential election approaches.
