Vice President Kamala Harris has yet to hold a formal press conference since becoming the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, prompting criticism from both sides of the aisle.
Vice President Kamala Harris has broken her silence after nearly three weeks of avoiding formal press conferences, facing intensifying criticism from Republicans and media outlets alike. Since becoming the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee on July 21, Harris has engaged in campaign events, spoken at various gatherings, and given brief remarks to reporters on various occasions. However, she has not held a formal press conference or granted any wide-ranging interviews in the 19 days that have followed.
Harris's absence from the press conference circuit has drawn attention from both supporters and opponents. GOP vice-presidential candidate JD Vance has urged the media to hold Harris accountable and get her to answer questions. National Review senior writer Noah Rothman has also questioned Harris's reluctance to engage with the press, noting that "the most revealing exposure to which a candidate can submit is a prolonged press conference."

NewsBusters executive editor Tim Graham expects Harris to follow President Biden's 2020 playbook, when he was accused of evading press conferences during the COVID pandemic. "Kamala Harris should absolutely hold a press conference," Graham said. "But we cannot expect her to break from Biden's serial avoidance of press conferences."
Others argue that Harris should follow the lead of former President Trump, who granted extensive access to networks that were often critical of him. U.S. News & World Report senior national correspondent Oliver Knox wrote that "of course" Harris should take questions from the press. He said that while a press conference may be a risk for Harris and her running mate, Governor Tim Walz, it is a necessary step for them to address important issues.

Harris's decision to postpone a formal press conference has also drawn attention to the media's treatment of politicians. Some commentators have accused the media of giving Harris a "honeymoon" and avoiding tough questions. Others argue that the media is simply holding Harris accountable for her duty as a presidential candidate.
Despite the criticism, Harris has defended her record of engaging with the press, stating that she has taken questions from reporters on various occasions. However, her critics argue that these brief interactions do not substitute for a comprehensive press conference.

The Democratic National Convention is set to kick off on August 19 in Chicago, and it remains to be seen whether Harris will hold a formal press conference before then. Her decision will likely be influenced by her campaign's strategy and the ongoing pressure from both the media and her opponents.
